LED license plate lighting: the most cost-effective upgrade for your car
License plate lighting is the only bulb on your car that stays on whenever you drive at night, and it is almost always the first to yellow, cloud over, or burn out. On most vehicles manufactured before 2015, it is still equipped with a W5W / T10 halogen bulb whose light has a yellowish-orange tint, while the headlights have switched to cool white. The result: a dull-looking rear end, an illegible license plate, and a technical inspection that could end in a retest.
This collection brings together all the LED license plate lighting modules in the catalog: complete plug-and-play units, Canbus error-free LED bulbs, and universal lights for trailers or vans. All in pure 6000K white, visually approved to illuminate the plate without glare or bleeding onto the bodywork.
Why replace the original bulb with an LED module?
- A finally legible plate: +200% light output compared to a worn-out halogen W5W, in neutral white light.
- Zero maintenance: 30,000 to 50,000 hours of stated lifespan, compared to 1,000 to 2,000 hours for a halogen.
- Power consumption divided by 10: 0.5 W per module instead of 5 W, a real plus for vehicles with a strained battery (start & stop, hybrid, electric).
- Visual consistency: the same color temperature as your LED headlights, turn signals, and taillights.
- IP67 waterproofing: O-ring and sealed housing, unaffected by high-pressure washing and road salt.
What type of license plate lighting should you choose?
Three families coexist in this collection, and the right choice depends solely on how the manufacturer designed the plate holder.
- The complete module (plug & play unit): it replaces the entire original holder, seal and lens included. It is the cleanest solution for BMW 3 Series E46, Mini Cooper R50-R59, VW Golf, Peugeot 206/207, or Nissan Qashqai, where the original unit always ends up taking on water.
- The W5W / T10 LED bulb: the most economical. You only change the bulb in the existing socket. Ideal for Hyundai Tucson, Skoda Octavia, or Mazda 3 when the plastic holder is still in good condition.
- The universal 12V / 24V license plate light: for trailers, camper vans, bike racks, or vans. Two-screw mounting, two-wire wiring, compatible with heavy-duty vehicles in 24 V.
Canbus and "error-free": what to check before buying
An LED consumes so little that the onboard computer of a recent Audi, BMW, Mercedes, or VW thinks a bulb has burned out and displays a warning light on the dashboard. References marked Canbus / error-free include a resistor that simulates the original consumption and removes this message. If in doubt about a multiplexed vehicle, always choose the Canbus version: it also works on vehicles that do not need it.

Installation: ten minutes, without specific tools
In the vast majority of cases, the operation is done from the outside: a flat screwdriver protected by a cloth is enough to unclip the original unit, you unplug the connector, you plug in the LED module, you reclip. On vehicles with a fitted hatch trim, you sometimes have to remove the interior trim — two to four clips, never more. Remember to test the polarity before re-clipping: an LED only lights up in one direction, so you just need to turn the bulb around in its socket.
Frequently asked questions about LED license plate lighting
Is LED license plate lighting allowed at the technical inspection?
Yes, provided that it illuminates the plate in white light, that it makes the characters legible from 20 meters away, and that it is not visible directly from the rear of the vehicle. Blue, red, or green LEDs, however, are prohibited and lead to a retest.
What to do if the "defective bulb" light comes on after installation?
This is the classic symptom of a multiplexed vehicle that does not detect the low consumption of the LED. Replace the part with a Canbus error-free version, or add a 6 ohm / 5 W ballast resistor in parallel.
What color temperature to choose?
6000K (pure white) is the best compromise: cool enough to match modern LED headlights, neutral enough to remain compliant. Beyond 8000K, the light turns bluish and becomes questionable at inspection.
Should you replace both sides at the same time?
Yes, systematically. A new LED next to a yellowed halogen creates a very visible imbalance at night, and the second original bulb will fail anyway in the following months. The modules are also sold in pairs in most references.
