Car horn: dual-tone trumpet, air horn and 12 V sounder
A city car's original horn often maxes out at around 95 dB, a level that modern windows and the vehicle in front's radio easily absorb. What sets one horn apart from another
- Actual sound level of 110 to 150 dB at one metre: this is the figure that determines whether you can be heard at 30 metres, with windows closed.
- Dual tone (high + low, often 400 and 500 Hz): the combination carries much further than a single frequency of the same power.
- Sealed housing and protected diaphragm: a horn mounted behind the grille receives salt, gravel and water all year round.
- Relay included on powerful models: beyond 10 A, the original wire is no longer sufficient and a separate relay is essential.

Three technologies, three levels of installation complexity.

- Air horn with compressor: 130 to 150 dB, truck horn sound, requires a location for the compressor and a relay.
- Multi-tone train horn: the most spectacular, designed for pickups, trucks and boats.
- Programmable electronic horn: several selectable sounds, after checking local regulations.
Installation and compatibility
Almost all references operate on 12 V, with a few heavy-duty models on 24 V. Installation is done on the original horn bracket, behind the grille or in the wheel arch, with standard flat terminals. On vehicles with a ground-controlled horn, a 30 A relay is necessary as soon as the consumption exceeds that of the original sounder. In France, only sounders with a uniform sound that cannot be mistaken for a priority vehicle siren are permitted on public roads.
Frequently asked questions about horns
Is a relay needed to install a powerful horn? Yes, from 10 A of consumption, which is the case for all air horns and electric horns above 120 dB. Without a relay, the steering wheel switch heats up.
Where should an air horn compressor be mounted? In a dry place sheltered from debris: behind the upper bumper, in the wing or under the bonnet, never directly in the wheel arch.
Is a 150 dB horn allowed on the road? The road code requires a uniform sound that cannot be mistaken for that of a priority vehicle. Multi-tone horns and sirens are reserved for off-road use.
Can you keep the original horn as well? Yes, simply wire both in parallel via the relay: the tones overlap and carry even better.
