Mercedes third brake light: the central safety light
The third brake light, this red strip placed at the top of the rear window or on the spoiler, has been mandatory since 1998 and is one of the points checked during the technical inspection. It is also a part that ages poorly: the LED panel becomes unsoldered, the seal hardens, and water eventually finds its way in. Removal is almost always simple: a few clips or two nuts accessible from the tailgate trim or from the rear parcel shelf, then a tab connector. Take advantage of the disassembly to check the condition of the foam seal: it is what prevents leaks into the trunk.
