50 mm chrome tow ball: the finish that won't rust under the bumper
A 50 mm tow ball spends its life outdoors, exposed to road spray and salt. This one is chrome-plated over its entire surface, from the sphere to the collar, and its extended shank makes up for the thickness of the beefiest mounting plates. The result is clean behind the vehicle: a chrome tow ball that stays shiny, and a thread that takes its full length instead of biting halfway.
An extended shank, and why it solves many mounting problems
On many mounts, the shank of a standard tow ball barely reaches flush with the nut. A longer shank changes the game: it passes completely through the mounting plate, leaves room for a proper washer, and allows for firm tightening. This is exactly what a trailer hitch mounted on a thick plate or one fitted with a riser block needs.
Four models are available, from type A to type D, with different collar and shank geometries. Compare the visuals with your mount before choosing: on a caravan tow ball, half a centimeter of shank or collar decides whether the installation is feasible.
- 50 mm or 2-inch tow ball — the two most common standards.
- Full chrome finish — corrosion protection and a neat appearance.
- Extended shank — for thick mounting plates or those with a riser block.
- Four models to choose from — types A, B, C, and D depending on your mount's geometry.
- Smooth sphere — the coupling ball rotates without any binding.
- Replacement part — to refurbish a hitch whose tow ball has become dull.
Mounting the chrome tow ball on your hitch plate
The installation remains standard: insert the shank into the mounting plate's hole, place the washer, then tighten the nut to the torque recommended by the hitch manufacturer. Installing a tow ball requires two precautions: a clean and dry thread, and a tightness check after the first few kilometers. Fasteners are not supplied; reuse the ones from your hitch if they are in good condition, otherwise replace them — check before installation.
Should you choose 50 mm or 2 inches for your trailer?
In France and Europe, the answer is almost always 50 mm: it is the dimension used to calibrate the hitch heads of trailers, caravans, and cargo carriers on the market. 2 inches (50.8 mm) appears mainly on equipment of North American origin. The right reflex before ordering a car tow ball: read the marking stamped on your trailer's coupling ball, or measure it with a caliper.
At Becquet Voiture, towing is chosen by dimension
We detail the diameter, finish, and shank type so you can compare them with your setup, rather than lining up adjectives. It is the same logic for all our hitch and towing parts: the only data published are those confirmed by the manufacturer, translated into French.
Compare the four types with your mounting plate and give your hitch an impeccable tow ball again.
