Towball cover: the part that prevents rust and unpleasant surprises

An exposed towball is exposed to water, salt and grit — and eventually develops rust spots where the trailer coupler rests. This universal towball cover fits over it without tools and seals the contact. Designed for European trailers with a towball measuring around 5 cm, it protects the sphere, reduces friction and gives the rear of the vehicle a neat finish instead of an exposed piece of steel.

A thickened metal cover that locks onto the sphere

The body is made of metal, with a stated thickness of around 0.3 cm: this is not a plastic shell that will fly off at the first trip on the motorway. A built-in spring lock presses the towball cover onto the sphere and holds it in place, without play or rattling. The manufacturer states a capacity of 800 kg for the assembly.

The surface is coated with a paint described as scratch-resistant, designed to limit friction and extend the life of the trailer ball cover. In use, it is also a matter of appearance: a bare, blackened ball looks untidy on a well-maintained vehicle, a fitted cover looks like an original piece of equipment.

Fitting the cover onto your towball

The action is a simple click: place the cover on the clean sphere, push until the spring lock engages. No tools, no screws. To remove it, release the spring and pull. A towball cover should never be placed on a greasy or sandy ball: a quick wipe beforehand prevents scratching the sphere. Measure the diameter of your ball before ordering — to be checked before installation.

What is a towball cover really used for?

Three things, in that order. It protects the sphere from corrosion, which eventually eats away at the contact surface and prematurely wears out the trailer head. It then prevents grease marks on clothes and calves, a classic when parking. Finally, it improves the visibility of the rear of the vehicle. On a car trailer hitch used a few times a year, it is the most cost-effective accessory in the set.
