55W HID xenon ballasts: the ignition unit that brings your bulbs to life
A xenon bulb that flickers, takes ten seconds to stabilize, or goes out when you hit a speed bump: nine times out of ten, the bulb isn't to blame. It's the 55W xenon ballast that's failing. These 12V HID ignition units replace the worn-out electronics in your kit and restore full power and reliable startup to your H7 xenon bulbs in just a few minutes.
What exactly does a ballast do in a xenon kit
Unlike a halogen bulb, which runs on the car's 12V supply, a discharge lamp needs an initial pulse of several thousand volts to strike its arc, then a perfectly regulated current to maintain it. That's exactly what the HID ignition unit does. As it ages, the regulation becomes unstable: the color shifts toward pink, the bulb lights up intermittently, or it cuts out unexpectedly. Replacing the ballast costs far less than buying a whole new kit.
55W electronics, sealed housing, and universal connectors
These ballasts deliver 55W, more power than the original 35W, resulting in a denser arc and faster startup. The housing is sealed against moisture and splashes, an essential feature in an engine compartment. The connectors follow the standard used by HID xenon kits on the market: input from the original power supply, high-voltage output to the bulb. They support H1, H3, H4, H7, H8, H9, H11, 9005, and 9006 bases.
- 55W xenon ballast — more startup power than an original 35W unit.
- Sold individually or as a pair — replace the faulty side or both at once.
- Sealed housing — designed to withstand life behind a wheel arch.
- Standard HID connectors — compatible with most kits on the market.
- Nine covered bulb bases — H1, H3, H4, H7, H8, H9, H11, 9005/HB3, and 9006/HB4.
Replace an HID ballast without removing the headlight unit
In most installations, the ballast is secured with two screws in the wheel arch or behind the headlight unit. Turn off the ignition, disconnect the battery, unplug the old unit, and reuse the same mounting points. Installing a xenon ballast requires no soldering: the connectors simply clip in. Just make sure to replace the original cable grommet to prevent the high-voltage cable from rubbing. Check compatibility with your kit version before installation.
How to tell if the ballast or the bulb has failed
The simplest test is to swap them: reverse the left and right bulbs. If the fault stays on the same side of the car, it's the HID ballast or its power supply. If the fault follows the bulb, the bulb is the problem. A failing ballast also shows typical symptoms: delayed startup when cold, a slight whine, and a color shift toward purple. A worn bulb, on the other hand, mainly loses intensity and gradually turns pink on both sides.
Find the right lighting part without spending all evening on it
At Becquet Voiture, we believe a lighting part should be chosen once, and chosen correctly. We stock ignition units that maintain stable regulation over time, and we're here to help in French when you're deciding between a targeted repair and a complete H7 xenon kit. Often, replacing the ballast alone is all it takes.
Choose an individual unit or a pair, replace the faulty unit, and enjoy instant xenon startup again tonight.
