Ford Focus MK3 front lip: the low line the front end was missing
A front lip is an add-on that extends the bottom of the bumper towards the ground and forward. This 3-piece kit is available for the Ford Focus MK3 from 2012 to 2018: a central section and two corner extensions that taper towards the wheel arches. Once assembled, the set covers a width of 167 cm. The effect is immediate: the car looks lower and wider without touching the suspension.
Three pieces instead of one: why it's an advantage
A one-piece front splitter is a single unit: the slightest difference in the bumper's curvature creates a visible gap. Here, the central section is fitted first, then each corner is adjusted independently to follow the bumper's taper towards the wing. This is also an advantage in the event of a parking bump: you replace the damaged corner without removing the entire assembly. The profile is designed low but flexible, which limits damage on the first poorly negotiated speed bump.
The three available finishes
-
Matte black — the most discreet finish, it blends into the bottom of the bumper of most Focus models.
- Glossy black — the lacquered effect of sports packs, superb on a clean car, more demanding to maintain.
- Carbon look — the woven pattern of custom builds, without the price or fragility of composite.
- Bumper protection — the lip absorbs curb rubs instead of the paint.
- Reversible installation — nothing is permanent if you resell the vehicle.
Exact dimensions of the front lip kit
Central section: 75 cm long by 11.5 cm deep. Corner extensions: 64 cm long, with a profile that goes from 11 cm to 5.5 cm wide along the length. Total width once the three elements are assembled: 167 cm, including 81 cm for the visible central part. These are the dimensions you need to compare with the width of the bottom of your vehicle's bumper — they matter more than the stated year.
Fitting the lip without removing the bumper
The installation is done with the bumper in place, wheels turned to clear the wheel arches. We do a dry fit, mark the mounting points, degrease with alcohol, then combine self-tapping screws and double-sided adhesive along the lip. Work at a temperature of at least 15 °C: below that, the adhesive does not bond and the lip will peel off at the first high-pressure wash. Allow one to two hours. Compatibility stated for the Focus MK3: check your bumper before ordering, phase 1 and phase 2 do not have the same front lower body design.
Frequently asked questions about bumper lips
What is a front lip for?
Aesthetically, it visually lowers the front end. In use, it protects the bottom of the bumper from curb rubs. The aerodynamic effect on the open road remains marginal.
Is a front lip approved?
An exterior addition must not create a dangerous protrusion or a sharp edge. A flexible lip fitted under the bumper remains within common use, but the technical inspection remains the sole judge.
Do you need to drill the bumper?
The self-tapping screws fit into the lower lip of the bumper, a non-visible area. Mounting on adhesive alone is possible but less durable.
Does the lip survive a speed bump?
The material is flexible and regains its shape after light contact. Speed bumps that are too high should still be approached at an angle.
Can you paint the lip?
Yes, after fine sanding and plastic primer, if you want the body color.
