Suzuki Swift Sport ZC32S ZC33S Short Shifter: a gearbox that snaps into place instead of floating

This short shifter replaces the original control for the 6-speed gearbox in the Suzuki Swift Sport ZC32S and ZC33S. The principle of a short shifter is purely mechanical: by moving the pivot point, it shortens the lever throw while slightly increasing the effort required. The result is immediate, hand on the knob: shorter, crisper shifts, and a third gear that no longer requires letting go of the steering wheel.

What a reduced-throw gearbox control changes

  • Shortened throw: the hand's travel between two gears is significantly reduced, both fore-and-aft and laterally.
  • Play-free guidance: new ball joints and bushings eliminate the characteristic play of a worn original shifter assembly.
  • Solid-machined aluminium: much stiffer than the original stamped sheet metal plate.
  • More precise shifts: the engagement is noticeable, and missed shifts become rare, even under hard acceleration.
  • No-weld installation: the assembly replaces the original control, with all hardware provided.
  • Reversible: the original control can be reinstalled at any time, preserving the vehicle's resale value.

Swift Sport short shifter: who is it for, and what is it used for?

A short shifter kit is primarily aimed at those who drive: track days, mountain roads, regularity rallies, or simply a ZC33S used for everyday spirited driving. It is one of the few modifications that can be felt from the very first kilometre, without affecting the engine or exhaust, and without impacting the vehicle's homologation. On a high-mileage ZC32S, it also corrects the play accumulated by the original shifter assembly. For purely urban use, be aware that the effort required to shift increases slightly: this is the normal trade-off for a reduced throw.

Technical specifications

Material: Anodised, solid-machined aluminium. Finish: Black. Application: Swift Sport ZC32S and ZC33S, 6-speed manual gearbox. Effect: Reduced throw when selecting and engaging gears. Joints: New ball joints and bushings provided. Hardware: Included. Welding: None. Installation: Reversible to the original control.

Installation and maintenance

Installation is carried out from inside the cabin. Remove the boot and centre console, disconnect the battery, free the linkages from the original control, then replace the short plate using the same mounting points. Tighten to torque specifications without seizing the ball joints. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for a careful mechanic, and a little longer the first time. Before reassembling the console, cycle through all gears with the engine off to check the shift pattern and reverse gear. Maintenance: one drop of grease on the ball joints once a year. Compatibility should be checked according to the year of manufacture before installation.

Frequently asked questions

By how much is the throw reduced?
The reduction is approximately one-third of the original throw, both fore-and-aft and laterally. The effect is immediately noticeable.

Can the original knob be reinstalled on it?
Yes, the shaft retains the standard Swift Sport threading. You can keep your knob or freely change it.

Does a short shifter damage the gearbox?
No, when correctly set up. It is forced shifting without depressing the clutch, short shifter or not, that wears out the synchros.

Does the centre console need to be modified?
No, no cutting is required. The console is reassembled as is.

Is it compatible with an automatic gearbox?
No. This kit is exclusively designed for the 6-speed manual gearbox.

Does the effort required to shift increase?
Slightly, as this is the mechanical trade-off for the reduced throw. Most drivers find the compromise more pleasant from the very first few kilometres.

Short, engaged shifts with no play or floater, for a reversible modification that can be felt from the very first corner: equip your Swift Sport.

Fitting steps

  1. Identify the gearbox

Check the gearbox type of your Suzuki Swift (manual or automatic) and the shape of the lever.

  2. Remove the original knob

Unclip the boot from the console, then pull the knob upwards sharply (or unscrew it).

  3. Fit the lever

Fit the lever in place of the original part, on the same mounts. No modification is needed.

  4. Plug in the connector

Plug the lever into the original connector of your Suzuki Swift. No wires need to be cut.

  5. Check the gear shifting

Go through all the gears with the engine off: the knob must stay firm.

  • On an automatic gearbox, keep your foot on the brake and the ignition off during removal.
