Roof bike rack: the rear wheel chock that stops the tire from sweeping
A locked front fork is not enough: it is the rear wheel, free to pivot, that moves the bike with every lane change. This universal rear wheel support solves the problem for just a few dozen euros. The tire fits into the cradle, the strap tightens, and the bike becomes a solid unit with the roof bike rack. Designed for 591 and 561-type roof supports, it also fits most crossbars on the market.
What the rear chock changes on a highway trip
Without a chock, the rear tire oscillates laterally with every gust and every air movement from a passing heavy goods vehicle. This movement fatigues the front mount and creates that unpleasant swaying that you watch in the rearview mirror. With the cradle in place, transporting a bike on roof bars becomes stable and quiet, even at high speeds.
The benefit is also material: less stress on the fork, fewer vibrations transmitted to the frame, and a bike that arrives at its destination in the same condition it left.
A versatile cradle designed for 591 and 561 bike racks
The shape of the cradle accepts the most common tire sections, from 25 mm on a road bike to the wide tire of an MTB. No complex adjustment: position, tighten, forget. The support can also be mounted on a cargo floor or a trailer bed, making it a useful part well beyond roof use alone. It is the kind of discreet accessory that makes an already installed car roof bike rack more reliable.
- Rear wheel immobilization — end of lateral tire sweeping during the trip.
- Compatible with 591 and 561 bike racks — designed for the most widespread roof supports.
- Quick mounting and removal — installation in a few minutes, without specific tools.
- Accepts road, gravel, and MTB — the cradle covers a wide range of tire sections.
- Versatile use — roof bars, trailer bed, or cargo floor.
- Resistant construction — material designed for permanent exposure to the elements.
Positioning the chock in the right place on your bars
First mount the fork support, place the bike, then slide the chock until it comes under the rear tire: it is the bike that dictates the position, never the other way around. Then check that the tailgate opens freely before tightening permanently. The complete installation of a roof bike rack, fork and rear chock, takes about twenty minutes the first time. Compatibility should be checked before installation according to your support model.
Is this chock suitable for a wide-tired MTB?
In the vast majority of cases, yes: the cradle is designed wide to accept both a road tire and a classic MTB tire. Extreme sections of the fatbike type are, however, outside the intended range. In case of doubt, measure the width of your inflated tire and compare it to the opening of the cradle before ordering.
