Universal engine oil catch can — oil vapors stay in the can, not in the intake

This universal engine oil catch can fits into the breather line and traps oil vapors before they return to the intake manifold. An oil vapor separator, or catch can, is a small reservoir in which crankcase gases expand: suspended oil condenses and falls to the bottom, while only air continues on its way. The result: an intake that no longer gets clogged, clean valves, and a turbo that no longer breathes in an oily mist. The body is made of aluminum with a transparent level tube that shows the collected oil without having to disassemble anything.

Why choose this oil catch can over another

  • Visible level tube: you can tell at a glance when to drain it, instead of opening the can to check.
  • Welded aluminum body: 143 mm long by 76 mm in diameter, lightweight and resistant to under-the-hood corrosion.
  • Breather filter included: open-circuit installation is possible if your setup requires it.
  • Fittings and clamp included: two threaded ends and a hose clamp are supplied with the can.
  • 9 mm internal diameter inlet and outlet (14 mm external): compatible with most breather hoses on the market.
  • 2 finishes: discreet black or polished silver, depending on the look of your engine bay.

Oil separator: which engines really benefit from it

Every direct injection engine benefits, because fuel no longer washes the intake valves: without an oil separator, deposits build up and eventually require a carbon cleaning service. Turbo engines and tuned engines also benefit, as suspended oil lowers the effective octane rating and promotes knocking. Finally, on an older engine or a slightly oil-consuming diesel, the diesel engine oil vapor catch can prevents an oily film from forming in the intercooler. Universal model: compatibility depends on the hose routing, which should be checked before installation.

Technical specifications

Type: universal condensation oil catch can. Material: welded aluminum, black or silver finish. Dimensions: 143 mm long, 76 mm in diameter. Level: side-mounted transparent tube. Connection: 9 mm internal diameter, 14 mm external. Contents: 1 can, 2 threaded fittings, 1 breather filter, 1 clamp. Installation: closed circuit (return to intake) or open circuit with the filter. Mounting: by clamps to a rigid point in the engine bay.

Installation and maintenance

Allow 45 minutes to 1 hour. Locate the hose connecting the valve cover to the intake, cut it, and insert the can, paying attention to the direction: the inlet comes from the engine, and the outlet returns to the intake. Mount the can lower than the pickup point and away from heat sources, otherwise the condensed oil will not drain back down. Drain the can every 2,000 to 5,000 km, depending on engine wear, using the level tube as a guide. In winter, check it more often: water condensation adds to the oil and can freeze if the can is too exposed.

Frequently asked questions

What is an engine oil catch can used for?
It traps oil contained in the crankcase gases before they return to the intake. The valves, manifold, and intercooler stay clean.

Should it be installed in an open or closed circuit?
The closed circuit returns the gases to the intake and remains the recommended installation for a road car. The open circuit, with the breather filter, is reserved for track use.

How often should it be emptied?
Between 2,000 and 5,000 km, depending on the engine. The level tube saves you from having to guess.

Is it compatible with a diesel engine?
Yes, and it is one of the cases where the benefit is most noticeable, as modern diesels heavily clog the intake.

Is this can suitable for my car?
It is universal. Just check that your breather hoses have an internal diameter close to 9 mm and that a rigid mounting point is available under the hood.

One can, two hoses, and your intake stops getting clogged mile after mile.
