2-inch trailer coupler: the part that holds the whole thing together

Between your car and your trailer, there is only one connecting component: the trailer coupler. It fits over the ball, locks onto it, and absorbs every acceleration, every braking, and every pothole. It has to be up to the task. This straight-tongue model accepts 2-inch balls, bolts onto a 3-inch-wide drawbar, and boasts a 5,000 lb capacity.

2-inch ball, 3-inch channel: the dimensions of this ball coupler

A trailer coupler should not be chosen by eye: two dimensions determine everything. The first is the ball diameter, here 2 inches (50.8 mm), the most common size on North American trailers and many imported boat trailers and utility trailers. The second is the width of the mounting channel, here 3 inches, which must match the section of your drawbar. Measure these two dimensions before ordering: it is the only way to avoid play or an impossible installation.

The straight-tongue design bolts directly onto a straight drawbar, without an adapter plate. This is the most common configuration on single-axle trailers, utility trailers, and small caravans.

Zinc-plated steel and 2.5 kg: why this trailer coupler is so massive

The body is made of zinc-plated steel, an electrolytic surface treatment that deposits a sacrificial layer of zinc on the steel. In practical terms, the zinc corrodes before the metal it protects, considerably delaying the appearance of rust on a part constantly exposed to rain, sea spray, and winter salts. The part's 2.5 kg weight is not excessive: a 5,000 lb capacity, or about 2,260 kg, requires generous material thicknesses at the jaw and locking lever.

  • 2-inch trailer ball — 50.8 mm diameter, standard for American trailers
  • 3-inch channel — bolts onto a drawbar of the corresponding section
  • 5,000 lb capacity — about 2,260 kg, within the GVWR limit of your trailer
  • Corrosion-resistant zinc-plated steel — designed for year-round outdoor use
  • Manual locking lever — quick hitching and unhitching, without tools

Bolting this trailer coupler onto your trailer's drawbar

The installation of a trailer coupler is done with the trailer unhitched and supported, and the jockey wheel down. Remove the old coupler, check the condition of the drawbar — no cracks or through-corrosion — then position the new coupler by aligning the holes. Use hardware of the appropriate grade and tighten to the torque recommended by the trailer manufacturer. The final check is done with the ball in place: the jaw must close without binding and the lever must return to the locked position on its own. If in doubt about the strength of the assembly, have the installation inspected by a professional.

50 mm or 2-inch ball: are they really interchangeable?

No, and this is the most common mistake. 2 inches equals 50.8 mm: the difference with a 50 mm European ball is eight-tenths of a millimeter. It is little on paper, but enough to create play that clunks while driving, wears out the jaw, and, over time, compromises the stability of the hitch. This coupler is designed for a 2-inch ball; if your vehicle is equipped with a 50 mm ball, you must either change the ball or choose a coupler designed for that size.

Your hitch parts verified dimension by dimension

For towing parts, Becquet Voiture prefers to publish the exact dimensions rather than vague promises: ball diameter, channel width, capacity, material. This is what allows you to compare with your drawbar before ordering. Have a question about your trailer's compatibility? Our French team will answer you.

Check the diameter of your ball and the width of your drawbar, then order the trailer coupler that will get your trailer back in service.

Fitting steps

  1. Prepare the fitting

Check your vehicle's towing capacity on the registration document. Remove the bumper or the cover if necessary. Check the package contents: 1 hitch head.

  2. Mark and drill

Hold the tow hitch in place, mark the holes, then drill first with a small bit before the final diameter.

  3. Protect and fix

Deburr, apply an anti-rust product to the edges of the holes, then fix the tow hitch with the hardware and seals.

  4. Tighten and check

Tighten all the hardware to the specified torque. Check the trailer lights.

  • Check what is behind the panel before drilling (wiring, reinforcements).
  • Have the tow hitch fitted by a professional: it is a safety part.
  • Retighten the hardware after 300 miles (500 km).
