Kia Rio 3 MK3 Tailgate Struts — a tailgate that holds open again

This pair of tailgate struts replaces the original gas springs in your Kia Rio 3 (MK3 generation, hatchback, 2011 to 2017). When a tailgate strut loses its nitrogen charge, the tailgate no longer opens on its own and falls back as soon as you let go. These two new pressure rods meet the manufacturer references 817801W200, 817701W200 and PGS940716.

Why replace tailgate struts in pairs

  • Supplied as a pair: both sides wear out together; replacing only one strut causes the tailgate to operate unevenly.
  • OE references met: overall length, push force and end type are identical to the originals.
  • Chrome-nitrided rod: the surface treatment prevents pitting that destroys the sealing joint.
  • High-density steel cylinder: no deformation under load, even with a loaded tailgate.
  • Double-lip seals: the guarantee of a tailgate shock absorber that won't lose pressure after one winter.
  • Clip-in installation: ten minutes, a flat-head screwdriver, no removal of interior trim.

Recognizing a worn tailgate strut

A tailgate strut is a gas spring: a piston slides inside a cylinder filled with pressurized nitrogen and holds the tailgate in the open position. Three symptoms indicate the end of its life. The tailgate slowly lowers on its own after a few seconds. You have to guide it by hand to reach the open position. Or it still works in summer but no longer at all in sub-zero temperatures, as the gas loses pressure in the cold. In any case, the charge is lost: only new struts can restore the opening force. Compatible depending on the version, to be checked before installation: compare the length and ends with the parts you removed.

Technical specifications

Set of 2 gas struts for the rear tailgate. OE references: 817801W200, 817701W200 and PGS940716. Black painted high-density steel body, chrome-nitrided rod. Filled with nitrogen, sealed with an O-ring and guide ring. Ball-joint ends with metal clip. Compatibility: Kia Rio III hatchback, 2011 to 2017. Package weight: approximately 700 g. Supplied without a paper manual, installation is described below.

Ten-minute installation

Open the tailgate and prop it firmly, or get help: it will fall back as soon as the first strut is removed. Lift the spring clip from the upper ball joint with a small flat-head screwdriver, release it, repeat at the bottom, then start on the other side. Mount each new strut with the rod facing downwards when the tailgate is closed: this is the orientation that keeps the oil on the seals. Snap the clips back into place and test three full openings. No maintenance required thereafter.

Frequently asked questions

Should both struts be replaced at the same time?
Yes. A new strut opposite a worn strut unbalances the effort and wears out the tailgate hinges.

My tailgate no longer stays open, is it necessarily the struts?
In the vast majority of cases, yes. However, check that the ball joints have not been torn from their supports.

Will these struts fit a Rio 4?
No, this model is specific to the third generation from 2011 to 2017.

Which way do you install a gas strut?
Rod facing downwards when the tailgate is closed. If mounted upside down, it will lose its pressure within a few months.

How long do they last?
Five to eight years under normal use. Parking outdoors in a cold region reduces this lifespan.

Are any special tools required?
A small flat-head screwdriver is enough to lift the retaining clips. Protect it with a cloth to avoid scratching the paint.

Give your Rio 3 a tailgate that opens and stays up: two new struts, ten minutes of installation, and the problem will be gone for years.

Fitting steps

  1. Secure the opening

Open the tailgate or hood of your Kia Rio MK3 (2011-2017) and have a helper or a prop hold it. Check the package contents: 2 struts (1 pair). Compare with the original part number 817801W200 / 817701W200.

  2. Note the direction

Note which way round the old strut was fitted: usually the wide end at the top.

  3. Clip on the struts

Line up the clips with their slots, then press gradually until they click, starting from one edge.

  4. Test the opening

Open and close several times: it must hold firmly.

  • Replace both struts at the same time.
